About The Position

This position involves performing interior and exterior painting and surface-finishing work throughout campus facilities. Responsibilities include preparing surfaces, matching colors, applying paint, and completing touch-up work. The role also entails repairing and finishing various wall and ceiling surfaces, installing and repairing flooring materials, and refinishing wood surfaces. Additionally, the painter will perform minor concrete and masonry repairs, assemble office furniture, and securely install fixtures. Communication with Project Managers, Architects, and campus customers regarding finishes and designs is crucial, ensuring adherence to University standards. The role also involves maintaining inventories, following safety procedures for hazardous materials, and coordinating with Environmental Health and Safety. Regular inspections of campus buildings, completion of preventive maintenance work orders, and evaluation of painted surfaces for repainting schedules are also key duties. Maintaining organized shop areas and tools is expected. The position may also involve assisting other Facilities Management units, providing technical guidance, participating in cross-training, and completing work-order documentation in the maintenance management system.

Requirements

Four (4) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position OR A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.
Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials
Exposure to and handling of paints, stains, adhesives, sealants, chemicals, and building materials requiring SDS compliance, PPE, and proper storage/disposal procedures.
In-person
State issued Driver's License
Pre-employment Criminal Background Check + Motor Vehicle Report (required for new hires)
Ability to submit evidence of the ability to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins.

Responsibilities

Perform interior and exterior painting and surface-finishing work throughout campus facilities, including preparing surfaces, matching existing colors and finishes, applying paint and coatings, and completing touch-up and restoration work.
Repair, patch, texture, and finish drywall, plaster, concrete/masonry, wood paneling, and metal wall and ceiling surfaces to restore damaged or deteriorated areas.
Estimate materials and labor needs, determine appropriate materials and repair methods, and plan the sequence of work for assigned maintenance and repair projects.
Install, repair, and replace vinyl, ceramic, metal, and wood wall and flooring materials; prepare substrates and replace or reattach vinyl and rubber cove base.
Sand, strip, stain, seal, and refinish natural wood surfaces and architectural finishes.
Complete minor concrete and masonry repairs, including patching cracks and sealing interior and exterior building surfaces.
Assemble and repair office furniture and securely install or anchor classroom and office fixtures and materials, including whiteboards, artwork, plaques, and similar items.
Communicate with Project Managers, Architects, contractors, staff, faculty, students, and other campus customers regarding requested finishes, color schemes, graphic designs, and other cosmetic or architectural changes.
Review requested work against established University standards and approved campus designs; explain available options and identify when a requested finish, color, material, or design is not consistent with campus standards.
Coordinate with the appropriate Project Manager, Architect, supervisor, or other Facilities staff when clarification or approval is needed before completing requested work.
Maintain inventories of paint, stain, adhesives, repair materials, and surplus stock; rotate, store, and replenish materials as needed.
Follow applicable safety procedures, SDS requirements, PPE requirements, and University policies when using, storing, and disposing of paints, chemicals, adhesives, and other hazardous materials.
Coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety regarding asbestos-containing materials and other identified hazards before performing work in affected areas.
Perform regularly scheduled inspections of campus buildings and structural systems, including doors and hardware, roofs, residence halls, and other assigned facilities.
Complete preventive maintenance work orders and identify deficiencies requiring repair, monitoring, or referral to another Facilities trade.
Evaluate the condition of painted and finished surfaces and maintain recommended repainting or cosmetic maintenance schedules based on established maintenance intervals and observed wear.
Document inspection findings, complete required preventive maintenance records, and report identified deficiencies to the immediate supervisor.
Maintain clean and organized shop areas, fleet vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
Assist other Facilities Management work units with maintenance, repair, snow removal, special events, and other operational needs as assigned.
Provide assistance and technical guidance to contractors and other Facilities staff when work involves structural, cosmetic, or architectural repairs within the position’s area of expertise.
Participate in cross-training and required departmental or technical training to support Facilities operations and maintain job knowledge.
Complete required work-order documentation, time and material entries, and other departmental records in the University’s maintenance management system.
Follow established University purchasing, inventory, and warehouse procedures when obtaining or using materials for assigned work.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
