About The Position

The Structural Steelworker supports experienced steelworkers and construction teams by assisting in the installation, positioning, alignment, and assembly of structural steel components. This role involves learning to read blueprints and specifications, handle and position steel materials, operate or assist with lifting equipment, and connect structural steel members using bolts, rivets, and welding. The Structural Steelworker will progressively develop the skills necessary to perform assigned tasks through hands-on training and on-the-job learning.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have resided in Guam for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years prior to entry into the program. A Mayor’s Verification of Residency is required upon hire.
  • Must be able to attend a minimum of two (2) classes per week, as specified by the apprenticeship program standards, while maintaining a full-time (40-hour) work schedule with PFM.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain work sites to ensure a safe, organized environment.
  • Review blueprints and specifications to determine work requirements.
  • Read blueprints and specifications to determine the locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
  • Install metal structural components.
  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors.
  • Bolt aligned structural steel members into position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding.
  • Erect metal or precast concrete components for buildings, bridges, dams, towers, storage tanks, fences, and highway guardrails.
  • Force structural steel members into final positions using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, or hand tools.
  • Drive drift pins through rivet holes to align holes in structural steel members with corresponding holes in previously placed members.
  • Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment.
  • Fasten structural steel members to hoist cables using chains, cables, or ropes.
  • Hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place using cranes or by signaling equipment operators.
  • Signal equipment operators to indicate proper equipment positioning.
  • Verify the vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels.
  • Cut, bend, or weld steel pieces using metal shears, torches, or welding equipment.
  • Unload and position prefabricated steel units for hoisting, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor, in alignment with the position's responsibilities, may also be required to support the team and business objectives.
