About The Position

Structural Steel Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and quality control ensures that welded structures, steel components, and building frameworks comply with engineering blueprints, safety laws, and industry codes. They perform visual inspections, monitor fabrication processes, verify welding procedures, and document quality control data.

Requirements

  • Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
  • 2 to 5+ years of practical experience in structural steel fabrication, heavy construction, or quality control/assurance.
  • Strong understanding of NDT methods, blueprint reading, welding processes (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW), and math proficiency.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, climb ladders, work at heights or in industrial shop environments, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with project managers, engineers, and floor welders.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect structural steel joints, fit-ups, and assemblies before, during, and after welding to check for surface defects, size conformity, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Read and interpret structural blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols to verify that work meets specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with major structural codes such as AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code - Steel) and related standards like AISC or ASTM.
  • Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and verify that individual welders hold proper certifications for the tasks they perform.
  • Witness and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT/NDE) activities such as ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT), or liquid penetrant (PT) testing.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, log non-conformances, write daily quality reports, and sign off on completed structural components.
