About The Position

Incumbents of positions in this series prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; prepare and/or review reports, studies and analytical data; perform calculations relating to engineering problems; perform engineering surveys; inspect construction and/or maintenance work; and perform professional engineering duties in such areas as highways, bridges, buildings and facilities all in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations and standards. Requirements

  • At least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials
  • Of which (B) at least three years must have been in a professional capacity
  • Of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.
  • A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.
  • Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience.
  • No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrates Structural Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of bridge analysis, design, and advanced computer modeling techniques as well as software used for structural engineering analysis and bridge design.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the design of bridge superstructures, substructures, and foundations of conventional bridges.

Responsibilities

  • Assists supervisor in managing the review efforts on structural aspects of District 6 projects to ensure project reviews are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provides supervision and on-the-job training to subordinates. Assigns tasks related to the duties listed below to subordinates, and monitors their work progress to ensure on time completion. Reviews subordinates’ work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Conducts performance review and EPRS (EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE REVIEW FORM) in accordance with MassDOT Guidelines with subordinates.
  • Reviews (1) design submissions (such as design calculations, Plan, Special Provisions, and Estimate) of site specific projects and design build projects, (2) construction submittals (such as RFIs, shop drawings, and demolition and erection procedures), (3) structural repair design packages, and (4) permit applications, to ensure accuracy and compliance with Federal and State regulations, engineering principles, and MassDOT standards.
  • Ensures review comments are communicated effectively to the design consultants, actively participates in resolving review comments, and attends Comment-Resolution meetings.
  • Resolves and/or oversees the resolution of structural related construction issues during project construction phase.
  • Participates in field investigations, inspections, and meetings to gather information needed for reviewing the projects and resolving construction issues.
  • Performs general calculations related to structural design, and quantity estimates.
  • Prepares engineering drawings and sketches using AutoCAD.
  • Assists in bridge and Tunnel project development, and prioritization.
  • Prepares in-house design for structural repairs, proposed construction, and modifications to existing structures, including but not limited to bridge structures, steel member repair/replacement, sign and lighting repair/installation, jacking and shoring of bridge super structures.
  • Performs various duties related to different projects and assigned work, such as preparing correspondence, gathering information, coordinating and attending meetings, record keeping, and updating project folders.
