About The Position

This role involves assisting structural ironworkers in various tasks related to the erection and installation of steel structures. Responsibilities include communication with the team, assisting with hoisting equipment, guiding steel members into place, fastening members, aligning holes, verifying alignment, bolting members, and potentially cutting steel members if trained and qualified. The helper also handles material transport, assists in positioning and securing materials, performs minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment, and adheres to all safety procedures. Many of these functions can be performed with the assistance of a journeyman.

Requirements

• Minimum of 6 months industrial construction experience.

Nice To Haves

• Trained and qualified to cut steel members using oxyacetylene welding equipment or grinders with metal cutting discs.
• Trained and qualified to perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Communicates with Ironworkers and others to perform job tasks.
• Assists in setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
• Guides member, using tag line(s) (rope) to guide it into position.
• Fastens steel members to cable of hoist, using wire rope chokers or slings.
• Aligns holes in member with corresponding holes in previously placed member with the use of drift pins or handle of wrench through holes.
• Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using Bazooka bob and level.
• Bolts aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
• Cuts steel members to make alterations, using oxyacetylene welding equipment or grinders with metal cutting discs (if trained and qualified).
• Loads, transports, and unloads materials, tools, equipment, or supplies.
• Assists in lifting, positioning, and securing of materials and structural members during installation.
• Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment (if trained and qualified).
• Adheres to all safety procedures.
• Accomplishes job functions with the assistance of a journeyman B or C.
