About The Position

As a Structural Intern in the Higher Ed Engineering market, you will play a key role in supporting the firm and shaping projects that make a difference—from concept through completion. You’ll collaborate with talented teammates, contribute your expertise, and help us deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions for those we serve. Internships offer invaluable hands-on experience to enhance your knowledge and understanding of your chosen career path. At Shive-Hattery, you’ll be treated as a full-time staff member with access to the same opportunities for learning and growth. You’ll work on actual client projects, where your contributions will directly impact both Shive-Hattery and the community. This experience will help expand your professional skill set and strengthen your portfolio, setting you up for future success. You will be paired with a mid-to-senior level employee who will serve as your mentor. This mentor/mentee relationship is designed to foster a supportive environment where you can candidly discuss your career goals and aspirations. Our one-on-one informal mentoring approach fosters the development of professional relationships that complement your academic learning, enriching your overall internship experience. You will work on a variety of project types including higher ed utilities, healthcare, and industrial projects. These experiences will provide insights into the profession, collaborative teamwork, and serving the needs of our clients.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis or a related engineering discipline.
  • Anticipated graduation in 2028 or 2029.
  • Completed or currently enrolled in Statics and Strength of Materials.
  • Basic understanding of structural analysis and structural design concepts.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Interest in utility, building, and industrial projects.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in enclosed spaces periodically.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a consulting engineering environment.
  • A full clean driver’s license is required.
  • Must have current and ongoing authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
