About The Position

This is a senior engineering role responsible for creating the processes and systems to deliver the Fenestration Division’s scope of services in the specialized field of structural glazing engineering. The role will shape how structural glazing engineering services are provided for the North American construction industry and involve building a team to deliver these services. The position involves working closely with the Principal, Fenestration.

Requirements

  • Professional designation as an Engineer with the appropriate accreditation to sign Letters of Assurance in British Columbia and Alberta and a willingness to expand engineering license to other provinces and US states as business opportunities present themselves.
  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of related industry experience in structural glazing engineering including a demonstrated track record of managing projects to completion on time and on budget.
  • Proficient in software required to perform structural glazing engineering services.
  • Proficient in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as required to perform glazing engineering.
  • Working knowledge of the 2024 BCBC, 2024 VBBL and 2025 NBC and other industry standards and a desire to stay up-to-date as these evolve.
  • Knowledge of building components and construction.
  • Superb project management skills.
  • Outstanding communication skills, verbal and written (experience writing reports) including the ability to translate vague or complex requests into concrete actions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, contractors, consultants, and larger groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent relationship building skills including networking.
  • Must hold a valid British Columbia Driver’s Licence.
  • Willingness to work at heights using scaffolding, ladders and other site access equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop JRS’ structural glazing engineering processes and determine what is required in order to provide the services required by the industry.
  • Provide structural glazing engineering using industry processes, software, and professional expertise.
  • Provide Letters of Assurance and/or engineered stamped and signed letters for structural glazing engineering.
  • Provide structural glazing engineering for a variety of glazing systems such as Curtain/Window Wall, Fiberglass, PVC and other specialty products.
  • Produce engineered fenestration shop drawings and coordinate these documents with other design requirements.
  • Oversee thermal modeling department and issue project specific thermal modeling reports.
  • Assist Designers with early schematic design concepts for structural ability and provide design concepts to address conflicts.
  • Provide conceptual engineering for manufacturers’ fenestration products.
  • Coordinate structural glazing engineering services with thermal modeling concepts.
  • Perform field reviews to verify engineering expectations.
  • Perform on-site evaluations of existing fenestration systems on buildings to determine their current structural integrity and attachment.
  • Apply North American codes and standards on glazing to guide designers and manufacturers on minimum expectations.
  • Maintain full knowledge of the scope of work and scope of services for projects including any changes which may occur throughout the course of the project; ensure services are compliant with scope and JRS company standards and procedures.
  • Maintain full knowledge of status of project budgets on a constant and ongoing basis.
  • Review monthly project billing to analyze billed services and ensure accounts are up-to-date.
  • Proactively manage all staff working on your projects to ensure profitability and quality consistent with company expectations.
  • Develop JRS’ brand in the fenestration industry through speaking at conferences, leading seminars, giving presentations, and obtaining coverage within industry channels.
  • Lead external training and workshops on fenestration structural glazing engineering.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to establish relationships with new clients and maintain existing relationships.
  • Build positive relationships with clients and stakeholders to achieve repeat business.
  • Lead proposals, RFPs, RFQs, and multiple portfolio/property requests; oversee the budget and schedule component of proposals.
  • Prepare marketing material and facilitate business and client development opportunities.
  • Assist with recruiting and hiring new staff for the Fenestration Division.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to team members.
  • Assist with managing workload and project assignments.
  • Assist with ensuring team members are developing the breadth and range of technical competency for structural glazing work.
