About The Position

Openwork is hiring an experienced Structural Fitter for a manufacturing operation in Houston, TX 77064. This hands-on position focuses on fitting, fabricating, and assembling structural steel components using blueprints, detailed engineering drawings, and welding symbols. Qualified candidates should have 2–7 years of structural fitting and welding experience with strong blueprint-reading, layout, fit-up, and fabrication skills. Candidates must be able to independently interpret drawings and accurately translate specifications into completed assemblies.

Requirements

  • 2–7 years of structural fitting and welding experience.
  • Strong blueprint and detailed engineering drawing interpretation skills.
  • Strong understanding of welding symbols.
  • Experience with structural layout, measuring, fitting, and tack welding.
  • Ability to independently complete accurate fit-ups from fabrication drawings.
  • Experience with welding equipment, jigs, fixtures, and fabrication tools.
  • Experience with gas-cutting equipment.
  • Knowledge of GMAW, SMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welding processes.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, overhead beam cranes, and jib cranes.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Required personal tools.
  • Strong attention to quality, accuracy, and safety.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Welder is a plus.
  • Trade school or Vo-Tech training is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, fit, and assemble structural steel and metal components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, welding symbols, and job travelers.
  • Measure, lay out, cut, prepare, and deburr materials.
  • Position, align, clamp, and tack-weld structural components.
  • Grind, bolt, and heat-bend materials as required.
  • Perform welding using GMAW, SMAW, FCAW, and GTAW processes.
  • Verify dimensions, alignment, fit-up, and finished work against specifications.
  • Inspect materials and completed assemblies for defects or quality concerns.
  • Help prevent warping, shrinking, and distortion during fabrication.
  • Follow material traceability and quality-control procedures.
  • Use hoists and cranes to safely position materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fabrication area.
