About The Position

Northrop Grumman's Space Sector invites you to bring your pioneering spirit to our collaborative teams. As a Structural Engineer – Level 2 or Level 3 located in Promontory, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one. This position is responsible for aiding the development of composite rocket motor cases and associated hardware. Candidate will contribute to both major design and analytical efforts based on knowledge and experience. This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer or associated discipline with 2 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 0 years of professional experience (for Level 2)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer or associated discipline with 5 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 3 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 1 year of professional experience (for Level 3)
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance
  • Strong understanding of solid mechanics principles
  • Strong understand of classical mechanics principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a self-starter
  • Ability to communicate technical content thru email, phone, in-person and group settings
  • Ability to organize and catalog information and documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or associated discipline
  • Strong understanding of solid rocket motor system design, development, and manufacturing.
  • Understanding of composite laminate plate theory (CLT)
  • Structures design experience with composite and metallic materials.
  • Successful candidate must be able to pass a background check for the Federal Safe Explosives Act (SEA)

Responsibilities

  • Support composite rocket motor case Production and Manufacturing operations by providing floor support with technical insight and justification
  • Perform closed form and finite element structural analysis to design flight hardware, disposition non-conformances, provide input for other teams, and provide technical information to customers. Siemens NX CAD software and ABAQUS/CAE are primary used programs.
  • Create engineering drawings and specifications to define design for hardware fabrication, write test plans, support fabrication efforts, oversee testing, analyze test data and revise designs based on results.
  • Use advanced in-house codes coupled with finite element analysis to create and analyze current and future rocket motor case products.
  • Perform 2D and 3D structural analysis for the design of flight hardware and test articles using Siemens NX CAD software and ABAQUS/CAE.
  • Learn and help maintain standard design processes.
