About The Position

AECOM is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Structural group to support our Water Business Line in Chicago, IL. This role involves experience in the design of new structures as well as structural forensic work, related to water treatment plant structures, commercial, and industrial buildings. The position requires performing specific and moderate portions of broader assignments, gathering and correlating engineering data, and working on detailed or routine structural engineering assignments using hand calculations and computer modeling. The role also includes technical writing for proposals and reports, performing fieldwork, and proposing creative solutions to new problems. The engineer will identify errors, guide entry-level engineers, and perform work within budget and schedule with little supervision. Client presentations are expected, requiring strong verbal and written communication skills.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Structural Engineering + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Valid Driver’s license and motor vehicle records check
  • Valid SE license in the State of Illinois
  • US Citizenship is required

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering is preferred
  • Microsoft Office Suite capabilities and use standard office software
  • Technical experience related to current structural design codes (IBC, ACI, AISC, ASCE-07, etc.)
  • Capable of supporting multiple projects at a time and meeting project budgets and schedules.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in water industry structural design.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specific and moderate portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures such as field notes, sketches, and photographs.
  • Works on detailed or routine structural engineering assignments involving hand calculations and computer modeling tasks using structural programs (RISA 3D, STAAD 3, Excel Spreadsheet, AutoCAD, REVIT, etc).
  • Experience in technical writing of proposals and reports, using reasonable cost estimates and schedules.
  • Performs fieldwork to review building conditions and prepare detailed field sketches.
  • Proposes a creative approach to solve new problems encountered using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
  • Identifies errors and discrepancies in results.
  • Guides and mentors entry-level engineers.
  • Performs work in accordance with agreed-upon budget and schedule with little supervision.
  • Independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete primary design elements for engineering work.
  • Client presentations are expected; therefore, acceptable levels of verbal and written communication skills are required.
