About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a Structural Engineer to join their E12 submarine engineering team. This team provides technical support to the VCS program (new construction) through construction and certification support. Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • US Citizenship Required.
  • Final Clearance Required to Start.

Nice To Haves

  • Comprehensive knowledge of processes relating to ships systems, construction and overall structure design.
  • Experience with welding processes and NDT requirements, including component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting.
  • Strong knowledge of dimensional control systems and practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Versed in the ship certification process.
  • Specific knowledge of SUBSAFE requirements.
  • Collaborative work with other internal/external design and engineering personnel; including NAVSEA, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
  • Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.
  • Provides technical support to the VCS program (new construction) through construction and certification support.
  • Manage and direct the work of others.
  • Interface intelligently with trades, management and the customer.
  • Develop documents to support certification events such as Work Deferral and Departure from Specification requests.
  • On-site resolution of issues encountered during construction.
  • Be a strong and proactive mentor for junior engineers, aiding them in development and professional growth.
