About The Position

CEP Forensic Inc. is seeking a Structural Engineer for their Edmonton office. This role involves acting as a forensic expert to investigate and determine the causes of damage in structural failures for residential, commercial, and light industrial claims. The successful candidate will conduct investigations, research, and analysis to identify causal factors while ruling out other possibilities. The company, founded in 1972, has 10 offices across Canada and employs over 170 professionals, specializing in various forensic investigations. CEP Forensic is ISO 9001:2015 certified.

Requirements

  • University degree in Civil / Structural Engineering or a recognized equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in Alberta.
  • 8+ years of western Canada structural design experience, preferably in a variety of construction materials (steel, concrete, wood, foundations, etc.).
  • Experience in consulting, construction quality control, or construction site supervision/project management is an asset.
  • Experience in renovation or repair of existing buildings is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in building condition assessments is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong command of both oral and written communication including report writing in English.
  • Knowledge of the Construction Codes and Standards.
  • Design experience in a variety of structures including wood, steel and concrete.
  • Field experience in civil/structural inspections.
  • Knowledge and experience in, infrastructure, construction methods and materials and geotechnical engineering is an asset.
  • Excellent ability to synthesize information, analyze, and solve problems.
  • Efficient, attentive to details, good hands-on skills, setting priorities and organizational skills.
  • Curiosity, good judgment and initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in consulting, construction quality control, or construction site supervision/project management is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and manage structural failure investigations and determine root cause of the failure and damage to buildings, foundations, structures, and building envelope mechanisms.
  • Attend client meetings and on-site inspections, perform damage surveys and condition assessments.
  • Review technical documentation including drawings, standards, codes, regulations, material specifications, maintenance, modification records, etc.
  • Perform Provincial Codes and Standards compliance analysis and reviews.
  • Gather evidence and determine circumstances surrounding the incident by capturing data, photographs, videos, and interviewing parties associated with the incident.
  • Safely secure evidence for further analysis, and presentation to client and/or in court if required.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary experts on complex investigations.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, from preliminary findings to detailed technical documentation.
  • Manage multiple projects while ensuring quality, timelines, and client expectations are met.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development.
  • Participate in business development activities and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Always follow HSE guidelines, procedures, and policies. Ensure safety of self, others, and the assets.
