About The Position

CMTS is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to support aviation, transportation, and public infrastructure capital improvement projects throughout the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) Region. This role will provide engineering support related to the planning, design, analysis, coordination, construction, and rehabilitation of structural systems associated with complex infrastructure and facility improvement projects. The Structural Engineer will work closely with project managers, construction managers, architects, consultants, contractors, airport stakeholders, and client representatives to help ensure structural systems are designed and constructed in accordance with project requirements, operational standards, applicable codes, and industry best practices. Projects may include airport terminal improvements, parking structures, bridges, utility infrastructure, transit facilities, building renovations, structural rehabilitation projects, roadway structures, and other public sector capital improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • 5–12 years of structural engineering experience supporting aviation, transportation, infrastructure, or public sector capital improvement projects
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, building systems, structural analysis, and design methodologies
  • Experience supporting structural design reviews, construction administration, rehabilitation projects, and field coordination activities
  • Knowledge of applicable structural codes and standards including IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, ASTM, and local jurisdictional requirements
  • Experience reviewing construction drawings, technical specifications, structural calculations, submittments, RFIs, and shop drawings
  • Ability to identify design conflicts, constructability concerns, structural deficiencies, and operational impacts while supporting resolution efforts
  • Experience supporting projects within active operational environments preferred
  • Strong analytical, technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and project correspondence
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with structural engineering design and analysis software platforms preferred
  • Ability to travel throughout Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia project locations as required

  • An equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant structural engineering experience where permitted by applicable regulations

Responsibilities

  • Support planning, design, analysis, coordination, and construction activities associated with structural systems for aviation, transportation, and infrastructure capital improvement projects
  • Review structural designs, drawings, calculations, technical specifications, and engineering documentation for compliance with project requirements and applicable codes
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders to support project delivery objectives
  • Review and respond to RFIs, submittments, shop drawings, product data, and change order requests related to structural systems
  • Conduct field inspections and site observations to verify construction activities, installation quality, and compliance with plans and specifications
  • Support construction administration activities including structural inspections, testing coordination, punch list reviews, and project closeout verification
  • Analyze existing structures and support evaluations related to rehabilitation, renovation, strengthening, and facility modernization projects
  • Assist with troubleshooting structural issues, constructability concerns, design conflicts, and operational challenges associated with structural systems
  • Coordinate structural engineering activities with multidisciplinary project teams to support integrated project delivery
  • Monitor contractor compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and structural engineering specifications
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering summaries, field reports, meeting documentation, and project correspondence
  • Participate in design reviews, progress meetings, construction coordination meetings, and stakeholder discussions
  • Support quality assurance and quality control efforts throughout all phases of project delivery
  • Maintain organized engineering documentation, project records, calculations, and technical files
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to operational excellence across project teams
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders
