The Project Manager is a technical and managerial role for professionals typically having 6 to 10 years of experience at a consulting structural engineering firm or similar organization. It is a progression from Senior Project Engineer roles, and the Project Manager is expected to possess the skills required for those roles. The position is primarily client-oriented and involves completing projects of varying size and technical complexity with minimal supervision. Firm Principals intermittently review projects technically and financially. Project Managers are accountable for the technical content of deliverables, project financial performance, and the client experience. Performance is evaluated primarily by the accuracy and consistency of results and the independence with which they are achieved. The role includes conceptualizing and optimizing structural framing systems; overseeing and sometimes performing modeling, analysis, design, detailing, submittal review, construction observation, and special inspections; preparing signed and sealed construction documents; and managing project initiation, budgets, schedules, billing, client communications, and closeout. The Project Manager produces complete project documentation and field reports, leads technical staff, maintains work quality and efficiency, and promotes positive client and industry relationships and the firm’s services.
