Structural Designer

Mattamy Homes
$57,500 - $87,500Hybrid

About The Position

The Structural Designer will design, coordinate, and review structural designs and manufacturing-level drawings for diverse, high-impact projects across Stelumar Advanced Manufacturing Inc. (SAMI) and Mattamy Homes Canada, working under the supervision of the Lead Structural Engineer. Collaborating closely with multiple departments, they will help deliver effective solutions that meet project objectives and timelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus.
  • 1–2 years of structural engineering or structural design experience, preferably with a focus on wood design.
  • Registration as an EIT with Professional Engineers Ontario, and a clear intent to pursue P.Eng. licensure.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes and structural design standards, particularly wood design, and snow, wind, and seismic loading provisions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong numerical and analytical ability, and clear communication
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software, and comfort building and auditing your own spreadsheet-based calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings, and to spot inconsistencies between disciplines.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects against manufacturing schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with panelized construction (wood or light-gauge steel stud), including panel breaks, splices, and shipping considerations.
  • Experience with shop drawing review for structural elements.
  • Proficiency with WoodWorks (Sizer, Shearwalls, Connections) or equivalent wood design software.
  • Experience with MiTek software, or similar.
  • Experience working alongside Revit, Tekla, or similar BIM platforms in a structural or manufacturing context.
  • Familiarity with prescriptive residential code provisions (OBC Part 9) in addition to engineered design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural design of low-rise and mid-rise buildings — primarily light-frame wood, with supporting steel and concrete elements — under the supervision of a Senior Structural Engineer.
  • Design and check gravity and lateral load paths: joists, headers, beams, columns, stud packs, shear walls, diaphragms, hold-downs, and connections.
  • Adapt designs for modular and offsite delivery, accounting for module-to-module connections, lifting and transportation cases, and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Maintain organized, auditable calculation packages and design assumptions suitable for review.
  • Work closely with the BIM modelling team to develop high-accuracy structural models suitable for manufacturing.
  • Review models for constructability, member sizing, dimensional accuracy, and correct representation of connections and hardware.
  • Identify and resolve clashes and interference issues with architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components early in the model.
  • Support the continuous improvement of standard details, component libraries, and modelling conventions.
  • Carry out detailed review of manufacturing and shop drawings for conformance with the structural design, standard details, and applicable codes.
  • Perform detailed review of truss layout and truss design drawings, including bearing conditions, girder locations, reactions, uplift, and load transfer into supporting structure.
  • Review floor and roof framing layouts, engineered wood product (EWP) placement plans, and connection hardware schedules.
  • Track and document review comments, resubmittals, and their resolution.
  • Work with the manufacturing/plant team, estimating, and site personnel to resolve field questions.
  • Support value engineering and material optimization exercises.
  • Contribute to internal design standards, checklists, and lessons-learned documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned
