About The Position

The Structural Designer is responsible for creating prototype technical illustrations of packaging ideas, on a variety of materials, to produce dimensional drawing specifications and samples for the client. This role involves confirming the accuracy and completeness of job orders, setting up plotting tables, and maintaining the production process to ensure designs meet customer requirements cost-effectively. The designer will also consult with the sales team on carton products, enter designs into CAD programs with detailed specifications, and ensure designs meet functional requirements and equipment standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Minimum 5 years of CAD and ancillary systems or design related experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in packaging design and development
  • Previous experience with familiarity with Artios Cad; Adobe Illustrator and Design required.
  • Ability to perform simple math calculations
  • Understand input, output, raw material, waste, quality control, cost and techniques for maximizing the manufacture and distribution of goods process.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Must be able to quickly and accurately compare letters, numbers, objects, pictures or patterns, including comparing a standard with production image.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine root cause.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiar with paperboard carton production and processing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create prototype technical illustrations of packaging ideas on various materials.
  • Produce dimensional drawing specifications and samples for clients.
  • Confirm accuracy and completeness of job orders.
  • Set up plotting tables and maintain the production process.
  • Consult with the sales team on current and potential carton products and recommend best practices.
  • Protect client products and aid in securing/maintaining industry certifications (AIB International, cGMP, FSC Chain-of-custody, ISO, and SFI Chain-of-Custody).
  • Enter designs into CAD programs per job order specifications, including materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Design cartons to fit customer product needs, ensuring efficient production in both customer and Quad's processes.
  • Ensure designs meet all functional requirements specified by the customer.
  • Provide technical support as needed.
  • Collaborate with sales and CSR teams to offer ideas for better product/design offerings.
  • Review and understand filling equipment to ensure carton designs meet equipment standards and run efficiently.
  • Help set internal standards for carton production to ensure correct running on equipment.
  • Program CAD files for prepress and die making to cut cartons in Quad's manufacturing process.
