About The Position

Parsons is seeking ambitious and talented Structural Bridge Engineer I candidates to join our growing Pennsylvania bridge practice, supporting projects with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Our Pennsylvania bridge group supports a wide range of PennDOT bridge projects, from conventional replacements to complex and accelerated bridge construction, across all PennDOT districts. Typical structures include steel and prestressed concrete superstructures, multi-span bridges, curved and skewed bridges, and a variety of substructure types. We deliver projects using both traditional design–bid–build and alternative delivery methods, and regularly coordinate with PennDOT, local municipalities, and other stakeholders. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is desirable
  • 3+ years of experience in bridge structural analysis and design, preferably on PennDOT or state DOT bridge projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed/precast concrete bridge design, including superstructure and substructure components.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with the ability and intent to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Pennsylvania; progress toward SE licensure is a plus.
  • Familiarity with:
  • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • PennDOT Design Manuals (especially DM-4) and PennDOT standard drawings
  • PennDOT’s project development and submission processes (e.g., TS&L, FDS, PS&E) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in bridge engineering software (e.g., LEAP, MIDAS, LARSA, CSiBridge, STAAD, or similar) and Bentley MicroStation/OpenRoads/OpenBridge tools; experience with PennDOT CAD standards is a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document design assumptions and results clearly for PennDOT reviews.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and open to learning new and innovative design procedures and methods, including evolving PennDOT standards, digital delivery, and model-based design.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams to complete bridge design tasks and plan development for PennDOT roadway and highway projects.
  • Structural calculations and design summaries compliant with PennDOT Design Manuals (e.g., DM-4, DM-2) and relevant AASHTO LRFD provisions
  • Bridge plans, details, and quantities using PennDOT standards
  • Technical reports, design criteria, and narratives
  • Construction cost estimates and bid documents
  • Perform structural analysis and design for new and existing bridges and related structures (abutments, piers, retaining walls, culverts, sign and signal structures) in accordance with:
  • PennDOT Design Manual 4 (DM-4)
  • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • Applicable PennDOT policies, standards, and strike-off letters
  • Coordinate closely across disciplines, especially with:
  • Roadway designers to ensure proper geometric constraints and staging
  • Geotechnical engineers on foundation and substructure design
  • Hydraulics/drainage engineers for scour and waterway considerations
  • Traffic/maintenance of traffic for staging and constructability
  • Provide clear, organized input and technical guidance to CAD designers/drafters and junior engineers to develop PennDOT-compliant contract plans, including:
  • Plan, elevation, and section sheets
  • Framing plans and deck plans
  • Reinforcing and prestressing details
  • Miscellaneous structural details and tabulations
  • Assist with load rating analyses and preparation of PennDOT load rating reports, using PennDOT-approved software and procedures.
  • Support quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) efforts, including self-checks and peer reviews of calculations, plans, and reports to ensure conformance with PennDOT requirements and project standards.
  • Support project managers and senior engineers with:
  • Schedule and task planning
  • Coordination with PennDOT district staff and reviewers
  • Responses to review comments and comment resolution matrices
