Structural Analyst

Analytical Mechanics Associates•Hampton, VA
•Onsite

About The Position

This position supports the Research, Science and Engineering Services (RSES) contract onsite at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The Structural Analyst provides structural mechanics, dynamics, and thermal analysis, as well as engineering work products for detailed structural systems supporting flight missions, conceptual designs, and Earth, lunar, and planetary exploration projects. The position is contingent upon the work being awarded. The listed salary range is $80,000 to $140,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required. The work encompasses system-level structural and thermal analysis and finite element modeling and analysis for flight, ground, and test hardware. Analysts evaluate complex aerospace systems and may work on ground support equipment, test fixtures, electronic boxes, flight science instruments, flight vehicles, or satellites. They document and present findings, guide design and manufacturing, and verify results through testing. They also develop assembly, integration, and test procedures; understand acceptance standards for spaceflight hardware; and participate in meetings and teleconferences to discuss design, analysis, qualification, and acceptance issues. Analysts may perform a range of solutions, including static analysis with or without thermal loads, normal modes, random vibration, buckling, and nonlinear static analyses. Preferred areas of experience include STOP analysis, MBSE and MDAO, optimization or sensitivity studies, PTC/CREO, and advanced structural methods such as nonlinear material behavior, fatigue, and fracture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Demonstrated use of Patran, FEMAP, or similar software and ability to solve using NX or MSC Nastran.
  • Experience documenting analysis and presenting or reporting findings.
  • Experience guiding design and manufacturing and verifying results using testing.
  • Experience documenting reports and technical memos in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience presenting findings to internal NASA groups, designers, project leadership, and customers.
  • Experience with Python programming or similar.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of tools.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required; the description also states U.S. citizenship is required or permanent residence.
  • Ability to analyze models ranging from ground support equipment or test fixturing to electronic boxes, flight science instruments, flight vehicles, or satellites.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing Structural, Thermal and Optical Performance (STOP) analysis.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and/or Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO).
  • Experience with optimization and/or sensitivity studies and scripting models together for system-based analyses.
  • Working knowledge of PTC/CREO software.
  • Knowledge of advanced structural techniques such as nonlinear material behavior, fatigue, fracture, or optimization.
  • Ability to use other software to solve structural problems and programming capability.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system-level structural and thermal analysis supporting flight, ground, and test hardware design and development.
  • Perform finite element modeling and analysis in environments ranging from Earth to other planetary atmospheres.
  • Perform static and dynamic loads and stress analyses of complex aerospace systems.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and other documentation.
  • Generate assembly, integration, and test procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of acceptance standards for spaceflight hardware.
  • Attend meetings and teleconferences and discuss issues involving design, analysis, qualification, and acceptance plans and reports.
  • Document analyses, present and report findings, guide design and manufacturing, and verify results using testing.
  • Present findings to internal NASA groups, designers, project leadership, and customers at project meetings, branch meetings, and design reviews as requested by project managers.
  • Solve a variety of structural problems, including static analysis, normal modes, random vibration, buckling, and nonlinear static analysis.
