Strike Warfare Mission Analyst

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Strike Warfare Mission Analyst applies operational strike warfare experience to mission-level analysis of advanced precision strike weapons, employment concepts, and force design. The role connects operational expertise with modeling, simulation, and analysis. The analyst helps develop realistic scenarios, ask relevant analytical questions, evaluate concepts of employment, and communicate findings to military and technical decision-makers. Modeling and simulation experience is not required on arrival; the team will provide support in learning its tools and methods. The analyst works with a team of more than 50 computer scientists and analysts performing mission-level analysis to inform acquisition decisions involving precision strike technologies and Department of War programs. The work evaluates capabilities in contested operational environments and supports unbiased analysis products, collaborative team development, and staff growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field, or equivalent relevant military or professional experience.
  • Operational experience with strike warfare, maritime strike, land attack, integrated fires, targeting, air and missile defense, or related missions, including activities such as planning, leading, evaluating, employing capabilities, or executing missions.
  • Experience communicating complex operational concepts clearly with technical teams, government civilians, military officers, and other partners.
  • Comfort learning technical and quantitative analysis methods, including modeling and simulation tools, data analysis methods, scripting, or scientific computing workflows.
  • Ability to obtain the required Special Access Program (SAP) level access.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret-level security clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret-level clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for eligibility to access classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • Operational experience as a Surface Warfare Officer, Surface Operations Limited Duty Officer, fires officer, air defense officer, targeting officer, strike planner, Tomahawk Strike Coordinator, Anti-Air Warfare Coordinator, Tactical Action Officer, Weapons Officer, Combat Systems Officer, Mission Commander, Maritime Operations Center planner, operational test professional, Army fires officer, or equivalent.
  • Warfare instructor experience or a qualification such as Warfare Tactics Instructor.
  • Experience with Tomahawk, hypersonic weapons, conventional strike weapons, affordable mass munitions, maritime strike, land attack, long-range fires, Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO), targeting, operational test, or joint fires.
  • Experience using modeling, simulation, operations research, mission analysis, data analysis, scripting, or tools such as AFSIM, Brawler, or Suppressor.
  • Experience leading teams, mentoring others, instructing operational concepts, or helping others develop operational judgment.
  • Active Secret or higher-level security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Apply operational strike warfare experience to mission-level analysis of advanced precision strike weapons, employment concepts, and force design.
  • Develop operational scenarios, mission vignettes, concepts of employment, tactics, and measures of effectiveness for conventional strike weapons, hypersonic weapons, affordable mass munitions, sensors, communications, command and control, and other mission systems.
  • Evaluate how strike capabilities work together across maritime strike, land attack, long-range precision fires, integrated kill chains, and contested force employment.
  • Model and assess the impact of threat air defense systems, survivability challenges, and contested operational environments on strike mission effectiveness.
  • Work with analysts, software developers, engineers, military operators, program offices, and decision-makers to frame analytical questions and evaluate operational effectiveness.
  • Learn and apply modeling and simulation tools to assess precision strike missions at the system, system-of-systems, and force-structure levels.

Benefits

  • Robust education assistance program.
  • Retirement contributions and retirement plans.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
