About The Position

Under the supervision of the Street Division Foreman, this position performs routine street maintenance and construction tasks. It involves a variety of semi-skilled manual labor and the operation of light to medium-sized automotive equipment. The role requires excellent customer service skills to maintain effective working relationships and involves operating a motor vehicle for departmental business. Responsibilities include operating various tools and equipment, working with a range of materials, performing heavy manual labor outdoors in extreme weather conditions, and working around noisy and vibrating equipment. Frequent exposure to gasoline, diesel, paint, and asphalt fumes is expected. Attendance and participation in the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program are essential functions of this position.

Requirements

  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Must have a telephone at residence.
  • Must be willing and able to be on 24-hour call.
  • Must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within 30 minutes after receiving a call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • One year of work experience in a construction-related field involving the operation of trucks or other related light automotive equipment, or equivalent vocational training courses.
  • Must pass the Entry Level Driving Training (ELDT) course to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License if not already possessed.
  • Must pass a baseline audiometric examination.
  • Subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy (pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up testing).
  • Extensive background checks required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine street maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Operates light to medium-sized automotive equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
  • Operates a motor vehicle for departmental business.
  • Operates jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand picks, shovels, brooms, rakes, pitch forks, pruners, and other miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Operates dump trucks upon obtaining CDL Class B.
  • Works with asphalt, crack sealing material, concrete, salt, liquid calcium chloride, liquid magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, herbicides, paint, traffic control signs, trash, weeds, tree limbs, dirt, rock, sand, and gravel.
  • Performs heavy manual labor duties outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Operates and works around noisy and vibrating equipment.
  • Handles frequent exposure to gasoline, diesel, paint, and asphalt fumes.
  • Controls traffic at work sites by flagging or setting up traffic control devices.
  • Assists in setting up and cleaning job sites.
  • Cleans weeds, trash, and other debris from work sites.
  • Performs custodial tasks.
  • Performs minor equipment maintenance inspections (greasing, checking fluids).
