About The Position

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled maintenance and roadway construction work for the City's Public Works Department. The position maintains City streets, curbs, and sidewalks; applies tar and asphalt to patch and repair streets; operates heavy equipment; and performs and records preventive maintenance on City equipment. The ability to finish concrete sidewalks or curbing is considered a plus. The position reports to the Labor Supervisor. Several vacancies are available, and the job will remain posted until filled. Requirements

• High school graduation and 5 to 11 months of experience as a laborer in maintenance and roadway construction, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid driver's license.
• Knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in basic construction and maintenance operations.
• Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City.
• Ability to use equipment, materials, and tools used in construction and maintenance trades.
• Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and follow written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
• Ability to read simple forms and prepare time sheets and leave slips using a prescribed format.
• Ability to record and deliver information and explain procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively in Standard English.
• Ability to use mathematical formulas and add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
• Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Nice To Haves

• Ability to finish concrete sidewalks or curbing.
• Skill in using backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, rollers, air hammers, power saws, and skill saws.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair City streets, curbs, and sidewalks; grade and pave new streets; and patch and repair existing streets, curbs, and sidewalks.
• Operate heavy equipment for digging, loading materials, compacting asphalt, and distributing tar.
• Install and repair storm drainage pipes, manholes, curbs, and gutters; set and finish concrete; patch asphalt; landscape roadways; and install curveboards.
• Clean ditches and storm drains.
• Operate snow removal equipment to remove snow and ice from City streets.
• Perform preventive maintenance on City equipment and maintain records of that maintenance.
• Perform other related duties as required.
