About The Position

The Office of Livable Streets (OLS) within the NYC DOT Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is seeking a Street Improvement Project (SIP) Coordinator. This role is crucial for organizing and prioritizing an increasingly complex work program across the agency, focusing on rapid and meaningful changes to city streets. The SIP-Central team is responsible for analyzing implementation capacities, communicating realistic annual work plans, leading inter-agency coordination, and improving database tracking and efficiencies to enhance project quality and output. The selected candidate will work under the direction of the Director of Street Improvement Projects to provide critical support to the SIP program by aligning project implementation schedules with resurfacings, traffic signal construction, state of good repair work, and other internal and external DOT programs. This position requires independent and collaborative work, managing multiple competing priorities, identifying project overlaps and conflicts, communicating dynamically with stakeholders, aligning schedules, and proactively advancing implementation priorities across multiple units and agencies.

Requirements

  • Serving permanently in the title of Transportation Specialist, or reachable on the civil service list, exam # 3027.
  • A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.

Responsibilities

  • Provide critical support to the Street Improvement Projects (SIP) program by aligning project implementation schedules with resurfacings, traffic signal construction, state of good repair work, and other programs within and external to DOT.
  • Improve efficiency by coordinating with multiple divisions to inform the sequencing of new Street Improvement Projects and upgrades to existing SIPs.
  • Manage and reconcile multiple competing priorities.
  • Identify project overlaps and conflicts.
  • Communicate dynamically with various stakeholders.
  • Align schedules.
  • Pro-actively advance implementation priorities across multiple units and agencies.
  • Streamline project delivery by identifying upcoming SIP locations that either overlap with the agency’s scheduled state of good repair work, or where the physical and fiscal integrity of the project would benefit from a resurfacing.
  • Strategize, prioritize, and track requests to align resurfacing dates with SIP implementations.
  • Manage upcoming SIP locations with signal construction work that overlaps with scheduled resurfacings to inform signal construction priorities and timelines.
  • Use the SIP Portal, maps and databases to identify existing SIPs scheduled for resurfacing or refurbishment.
  • Coordinate with project managers or their delegates to determine treatment changes or upgrades.
  • Prioritize updates in the design queue.
  • Coordinate with the Furniture and Operations Unit to plan for temporary furniture relocations related to resurfacings.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners on other agency or city-wide initiatives.
  • Perform additional tasks related to the assigned role as needs arise.
