About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking a hands-on, hardworking individual to join the Green Infrastructure team within the Stormwater Division of Public Works. This role involves maintaining the City's flood lots, rights-of-way, and other public facilities, while developing practical skills in landscaping and turf management. Responsibilities include operating basic landscaping tools and equipment for mowing, trimming, and maintaining public spaces. The position offers hands-on training in turf management, planting, mulching, and general landscape upkeep. Additional duties include assisting with facility maintenance tasks such as aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding, as well as cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment. During winter, the role involves snow removal, and may also include supporting special events or emergency response efforts, which could require some nights and weekends. Accurate record-keeping through log sheets and checklists is also required. Within 12 months of hire, employees must obtain a Class B CDL with a Tanker endorsement and complete basic training and certifications, including safety and landscape tool operation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Training in a relevant trade area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL with a Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • Complete basic training and certifications during the first year, including safety certifications and training on landscape tools operation.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements depending on departmental requirements.
  • May require Pesticide Registered Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate basic landscaping tools and equipment, including weed eaters, saws, and other small power tools, to mow, trim, and maintain public spaces.
  • Learn and apply fundamentals of turf management, planting, mulching, and general landscape upkeep.
  • Assist with facility maintenance tasks such as aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Assist with snow removal during winter weather.
  • Support special events or emergency response efforts, which may include some nights and weekends.
  • Maintain accurate log sheets and checklists for daily tasks.
  • Perform skilled work in the maintenance of Storm drain assets and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of BMP’s, Bench Cuts, landscaping, green roof and stormwater infrastructure inspections.
  • Gather and report work site information from inspections.
  • Perform tasks such as asphalt and/or concrete placement and leveling.
  • Operate all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removal.
  • Perform general laboring tasks such as collecting and removing trash and debris from City properties when not operating equipment.
  • Assist with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
  • May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
