About The Position

The City of Wilmington is seeking a Stormwater Crew Leader to join their Stormwater Maintenance team. This role is crucial for protecting the community from flooding, drainage issues, and environmental damage by maintaining storm drains, culverts, ditches, and drainage systems. The team works collaboratively to respond to severe weather events, restore infrastructure, and ensure water flows safely. The position offers hands-on training, mentorship, cross-training, and CDL development, with clear pathways for advancement. The Crew Leader plans work methods and procedures, oversees work site setup, work zone safety, traffic control, hazard observation, and employee supervision. Responsibilities also include training subordinates, operating various types of equipment, and performing preventive maintenance. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy problem-solving, working outdoors, and making a community impact.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum three (3) years of related heavy equipment experience.
  • Selected applicants will be required to perform a heavy machinery skills test.
  • Current driver's license.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including hurricanes, snow, and ice storms.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and lift heavy objects.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying materials and equipment.
  • Exposure to traffic and active work zones.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns daily tasks, monitors work quality, and ensures the crew adheres to all safety and traffic control protocols.
  • Directs the repair, cleaning, and upkeep of storm drains, open channels, ditches, and retention ponds.
  • Operates light, medium, and heavy machinery (e.g., dump trucks, vac con, sweeper truck, excavators) for various maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Performs operational support including maintaining buildings, assisting in storm preparation and clean up, attending safety meetings and training, communicating with the public, and maintaining equipment.
  • Documents project progress and maintains environmental standards to comply with regulations.
  • Coaches subordinate workers, leads safety tailgates, and assists with hiring and performance evaluations.
