About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, staff development, merchandising, inventory and financial controls, store safety, and compliance with company policies and applicable labor laws. The role involves frequent physical activity and some travel, including occasional driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores. Limited overnight stays may be required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Occasional driving; provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.
Must be 21 or older, as stated in the job title.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise and using fixtures appropriately.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked, safe stores for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
