About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role fosters the development of an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is intended to be held for a limited period.

The position supports recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store opening and closing, cash and security controls, store cleanliness and safety, and completion of required paperwork. The candidate operates the store in the Store Manager’s absence and reviews operating statements to identify business trends, expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.

The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It also involves regular driving of the employee’s own vehicle to meetings, other stores, and bank deposits, in addition to occasional climbing and exposure to outdoor weather, cleaning solutions, slippery floors, and extreme cold in freezers.

Requirements

• Two or more years of experience in a leadership or managerial position.
• Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
• Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
• Ability to learn and perform cash register functions, including generating reports.
• Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
• Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices.
• Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
• Proficient interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to solve problems and handle varied situations where limited standardization exists.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to regularly drive a personal vehicle for meetings, visits to other Dollar General stores, and deposits.
• Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.

Nice To Haves

• High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
• Two or more years of experience in a retail grocery store is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
• Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, and presenting merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction; properly use fixtures, signage, and pricing.
• Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
• Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
• Provide customer service leadership.
• Model compliance with Company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and Company communications.
• Participate in store opening and closing activities.
• Ensure Company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
• Assist in maintaining financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
• Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
• Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
• Review operating statements for business trends, expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
• Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
