About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps manage store operations and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The position involves customer service leadership, employee development, merchandising, inventory and financial controls, paperwork, and maintaining a clean and safe store. It also requires occasional travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving or provision of own transportation for work-related activities.
Ability to meet physical requirements, including frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; and occasional ladder climbing.
Willingness to travel occasionally, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and preparing for and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and collaboration, and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, or visits to other Dollar General stores.
