About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, merchandising, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and general store operations. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and help ensure customer service, financial integrity, safety, compliance, and effective daily operations. The role includes some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.

Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, meetings, and visits to other stores.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, signing, pricing, and proper use of merchandise fixtures.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development, cooperation, collaboration, and communication between store employees and the Store Support Center.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally travel to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
