About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead customer service and store operations, supports recruiting and staff development, assists with merchandising and inventory controls, and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The role also involves maintaining store safety and cleanliness, protecting company funds and assets, reviewing operating statements, and completing required documentation. The position requires frequent physical activity and some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking and standing; bending, stooping, and kneeling; and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise; ensuring proper presentation; and using fixtures, signs, and pricing appropriately.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and preparing for and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as required, including occasional trips to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
