About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army by ringing up sales utilizing a cash register, collecting monies, counting change, and preparing receipts. The role also involves preparing and packaging purchased items, balancing the cash drawer, and running routine register printouts. The Store Clerk & Sorting Room Worker ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records, maintains the neatness and security of the cash register area, and ensures adequate stocking of forms and bags. Additionally, this role assists customers by explaining store policy, responding to questions regarding pricing and purchasing, and ensuring a pleasant customer experience. The position also involves assisting customers donating items, directing them to the proper area, potentially hauling donations, and preparing tax receipts. Key responsibilities include placing and arranging items in the store, checking and maintaining store displays, rotating and rearranging stock, and returning items to their proper locations. The role also requires answering the store telephone tactfully and courteously, and receiving, inspecting, and sorting donated items according to category and condition.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  • Ability to operate a cash register.
  • Ability to perform routine mathematical computations and count change.
  • Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull moderately heavy (25-50lbs.) materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Moderate mobility: duties are usually performed by a combination of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience working in a retail store preferred, Or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army by ringing up sales utilizing a cash register; collects monies, counts change, and prepares receipts; prepares and packages purchased items; prepares and balances the cash drawer and runs routine register printouts; ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records by established operating procedures.
  • Maintains the neatness and security of the cash register area; ensures that forms, bags, etc., are adequately stocked.
  • Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and purchasing of items; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.
  • Assists customers donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area; may help haul donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.
  • Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that they are maintained and displayed neatly and orderly; rotates and rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customers have handled them.
  • Answers the store telephone tactfully and courteously; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and general information.
  • Receives, inspects, and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brack, etc., according to the category and condition.
