About The Position

Stevedores are responsible for the loading and unloading of cargo from ships. This role involves operating heavy machinery, securing cargo, planning stowage, and ensuring safety compliance in a physically demanding environment. Stevedores work outdoors in various weather conditions and often have flexible schedules that include nights, weekends, and overtime.

Requirements

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy loads (often exceeding 50 lbs) throughout the shift.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including heat, rain, wind, and cold weather.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery as needed.
• Ability to maintain cleanliness of work areas, including sweeping, debris removal, and equipment maintenance.
• Ability to work day and/or evening shifts, overtime during the week and/or on weekends.
• Must be able to pass a physical, drug screen and background check.
• Must be able to obtain a TWIC Badge.
• Physical Fitness: Ability to lift heavy loads and work in strenuous conditions.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating cargo handling equipment.
• Attention to Detail: Critical for cargo safety and proper documentation.
• Teamwork: Strong coordination with other dockworkers and supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload cargo from ships using cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery.
• Secure cargo using chains, straps, and other equipment to prevent shifting during transit.
• Organize cargo placement to optimize space and maintain vessel stability.
• Check cargo for damage and report discrepancies.
• Coordinate with crane operators and other team members using hand signals or radios.
• Follow strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
• Assist in preparing cargo (e.g., vehicles, equipment, bulk goods, break bulk, rigging, and various cargos) for delivery and/or storage.
• Perform warehousing and storage duties.
