About The Position

The Sterilization Tech I position at Marshall Medical Centers South, within the Surgery department, is a full-time role on the 1st shift with call responsibilities. This role involves ensuring the proper sterilization of instruments and managing surgical supplies. The statements provided reflect general duties, not an exhaustive list of all requirements. The position is supervised by the Surgical Services Unit Charge Nurses and the Director of Surgical Services.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Must have current BCLS certification.
  • Sterile processing national certification required.

  • Supply chain experience preferred.
  • Advanced training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to hospital/department policy, including maintaining good attendance, punctuality, following dress code, observing confidentiality, adhering to safety policies, participating in continuing education, and following all department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Monitors OR supplies and works with the clinical buyer to oversee outdates and needed supplies for cases.
  • Helps establish PAR levels and organization of supplies.
  • Works with surgical techs, director, and buyer to ensure proper supplies are available for cases.
  • Anticipates product needs by monitoring the OR schedule and coordinating with the charge nurse and director.
  • Pulls cases prior to the day of surgery with instruments needed to assist with turnover of rooms.
  • Assists with improvement of turnover of rooms.
  • Utilizes devices to be available to pull needed supplies for surgical rooms during surgery when necessary.
  • Utilizes pick sheets to ensure proper supplies are pulled to open, assist with changes and updates for preference cards.
  • Works in sterile processing as needed to assist with sterilization of instruments.
  • Call responsibility for sterile processing.
  • Keeps the instrument room organized and rotates stock.
  • Understands and demonstrates all sterile processing competencies: Washers, sterilizers, biologicals, indicators, storage, tracing of instruments, monthly records, completeness of trays.
  • Understands and demonstrates sterile supply maintenance: rotation of supplies, ensuring proper handling of supplies.
  • Understands the process in preference cards to pull instruments and supplies.
  • Demonstrates proper PPE usage.
