About The Position

The Sterile Tech position is responsible for assembling, cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and/or storing procedure trays, surgical trays, and equipment. This role also involves assembling, distributing, and/or delivering disposable and durable medical equipment, case carts, and supplies to meet the needs of the Operating Room, Nursing Units, Ancillary Departments, and SCL Clinics. The technician operates and monitors sterilization equipment, disassembles carts, and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination. Responsibilities include sterilizing and disinfecting durable medical equipment and instruments, packaging clean supplies and instruments, maintaining records for all instruments, and transporting sterilized items. The role requires assembling sterilized instruments, rechecking them for cleanliness and impairment, and properly checking power equipment. Additionally, the Sterile Tech must take measures to allow for easy instrument tracking, including following labeling processes, using an engraver, and reporting/documenting missing instruments and implants. Communication with Central Processing staff and the Surgery Charge Nurse regarding equipment and instrument inventory status is essential. The technician must respond to emergency situations by ensuring all emergency, trauma, and add-on cases are supplied and delivered promptly. Utilizing applications and technology for accurate record-keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations is required. The position also includes providing on-the-job training to new associates and promoting the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, adhering to service behavior standards. Other duties as assigned may include overtime, floating to other departments within scope of competency, and being placed on-call.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team.
  • Experience and understanding in the use of computers, as well as the ability to learn software relevant to Sterile Processing.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service oriented environment.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends.
  • Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required.

  • Previous experience in hospital or clinic operating room.

Responsibilities

  • Assembling, cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and/or storing procedure trays, surgical trays and equipment.
  • Assembling, distributing and/or delivering disposable and durable medical equipment, case carts and supplies to fill the needs of the Operating Room, Nursing Units, Ancillary Departments and SCL Clinics.
  • Operating and monitoring sterilization equipment.
  • Disassembling carts and following Universal Precautions for decontamination.
  • Sterilizing, disinfecting durable medical equipment and instruments, packaging clean supplies and instruments, maintaining records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
  • Assembling sterilized instruments and rechecking all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment.
  • Taking measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
  • Communicating the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
  • Responding to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
  • Utilizing applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Providing on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.
  • Promoting mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work overtime based on business need.
  • May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.
