About The Position

Performs a variety of duties in sterile processing to assist the surgical team. Assignments include, but are not limited to, receiving, inspecting, preparing, storing, and delivering supplies, instruments, and equipment. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direct supervision of a departmental director/manager or designee who assigns, instructs, and evaluates work for conformance to prescribed procedures and techniques.

Requirements

  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Ability to input and retrieve data from computer/information systems.
  • Ability to maintain empathetic attitude toward patients and harmonious working relationships with Medical Center staff, physicians, visitors, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an accredited college-level Sterile Processing Technology program.
  • Current certification as a central service technician by the HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM), NICHSPDP, or veterans administration.
  • One (1) year of experience in the sterile processing of instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares case carts for surgical procedures.
  • Ensures that necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and ready for use.
  • Receives, cleans, checks, maintains, stores and delivers medical supplies, equipment and machinery.
  • Cleans, prepares, and operates sterilizers, washers, and decontamination equipment.
  • Standard test packs and conducts sterilizer tests with biological monitors according to procedure.
  • Labels supplies with lot numbers as applicable.
  • Maintains clean, safe and orderly work environment.
  • Assists in orientation of personnel newly assigned to area as required.
  • Attends educational/developmental programs as assigned.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
