The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role ensures the proper functionality and sterility of these items to prevent infection within a healthcare facility, adhering to strict guidelines and protocols established by regulatory agencies. The position involves collecting used and contaminated equipment, manually cleaning supplies, operating and maintaining decontamination and sterilization equipment, and meticulously examining supplies to ensure they are properly cleaned and sanitized. The technician will also test and report any issues with sterilization equipment, prepare and wrap equipment into instrument trays, and deliver necessary equipment and instruments for surgeries and procedures. Maintaining records of sterilization procedures, sterilized items, equipment maintenance, and supplies, as well as controlling inventory and reordering supplies, are key duties. This role is typically performed in a clinical environment and requires adherence to all organizational policies and procedures.
