The Instrument Technician is responsible for the care and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies. The technician maintains established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment. Orders supplies for the area. The technician performs the appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keeps accurate records. This role requires open, direct, tactful, and effective communication, appreciating and respecting others' needs, opinions, and concerns. The technician must conduct themselves courteously and professionally in all interactions, demonstrating sincere concern for the needs of all customers. Knowledge and compliance with Patient Rights, including patient confidentiality and respecting patient privacy, are essential. The technician should resolve interpersonal conflicts independently and positively, seeking appropriate assistance when necessary. Submitting documentation of required current certification in a timely manner, willingly participating in cross-training activities for professional growth, and actively participating in staff meetings, committees, performance improvement, and special projects are expected. The technician must assume responsibility for updating knowledge of current policies and procedures, protocol, and practices, functioning within their scope of practice based on education, skills, and experience, and recognizing limitations. Participation in the orientation or preceptorship of newly hired or transferred employees and serving as a positive role model are also key. Demonstrating satisfactory attendance and punctuality, taking full responsibility for all functions within the job description, and assuring completion before leaving are required. Adherence to the dress code, maintaining respect for the physical plant, property, equipment, and supplies, and reporting problems/needs timely and appropriately are necessary. Flexibility in recognizing and accepting changing conditions while maintaining performance and promoting a positive attitude is important. Maintaining an orderly education file and keeping mandatory educational requirements current is required. Demonstrating understanding of growth and development principles and the ability to provide age-specific care is essential. Knowledge and skill requirements regarding the Safety Management Program (Safety/Security), Infection Control, Hazardous Materials, Emergency Preparedness, Life Safety, Medical Equipment, and Utility Systems are necessary, along with submitting documentation of annual updates. The technician must be able to explain the Fire Plan, the departments’ role in an internal/external disaster, identify hazardous materials and SDS sheets, and report hazardous working conditions. Knowledge of basic infection control precautions, how to report equipment malfunctions, and when/how to complete an incident report form are required. Adherence to established policy and procedures, knowledge of utility problem reporting, and explaining steps for notifying appropriate personnel during security risks are also necessary. Competence in preparing and cleaning OR suites, thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring, and active participation in instrument processing are crucial. Utilizing appropriate personal protective gear, participating in Center-wide performance improvement activities, and demonstrating appropriate information release to customers are expected. Maintaining confidentiality of patient and employee information is mandatory. Assisting with room turnover, removing and reprocessing dirty instruments, cleaning, lubricating, disinfecting, and handling instruments and equipment according to standards are key responsibilities. Assembling instruments into sets or individual packages, checking for proper working condition, packaging items correctly, and labeling according to contents are required. Consulting with other staff members when in question and communicating missing or malfunctioning items to the Clinical Director are necessary. Sterilizing items using the proper method, using and placing sterilization indicators correctly, performing biological and air removal testing, and recording results are essential. Understanding and effectively using all equipment in processing areas, maintaining adequate but cost-effective inventory, checking sterile supplies, and reporting shortages are required. Unpacking, checking in, and storing supplies, rotating supplies, and handling sterile supplies and equipment carefully are also part of the role. Keeping the work area clean, neat, and organized is important. Flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts, maintaining awareness of posted schedules, and creating personal mechanisms to stay updated with changes are required. Following established procedures for schedule changes and demonstrating flexibility in requesting time changes are necessary. Communicating with management when staffing assistance is required, and assisting to adjust assignments and set priorities if help is not available, are also key.
