About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician - Surgery Center position is a part-time role within the AHCMG Surgery Center. The technician is responsible for processing all reusable medical/surgical items, sterilizing instruments and equipment, and ensuring patient care equipment is clean and functioning properly. This role involves meticulous attention to detail in cleaning, assembling, packaging, and distributing sterile supplies, as well as maintaining inventory levels and adhering to departmental policies and environmental standards.

Requirements

  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to receive and present information with proper conduct and tact.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. from floor to overhead.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 20 lbs. of force.
  • Position requires repetitive use of feet (i.e., heat sealer, sonic cleaner).
  • Must have functional speech, vision, touch, and hearing.
  • May be exposed to chemical hazards; therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

Responsibilities

  • Processes all reusable medical/surgical items for issue according to departmental and infection control policy and procedures.
  • Sterilizes instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control guidelines.
  • Completes thorough cleaning of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Processes patient care equipment for re-issue.
  • Inspects patient care equipment for cleanliness and proper functioning.
  • Inspects surgical instruments and equipment for proper functioning.
  • Performs biological indicator tests on the Steam sterilizers and the Sterrad Unit and Steris One.
  • Assembles instrument sets according to department protocols.
  • Packages instrument sets for sterilizing.
  • Distributes sterile equipment to appropriate areas.
  • Communicates and notifies all personnel for the recall of sterilized items.
  • Restocks surgery unit with medical/surgical supplies.
  • Maintains established supply levels in the Central Processing area.
  • Revises department policies to meet the department standards.
  • Observes environmental standards for the Central Processing area.
  • Lifts, carries and/or pushes/pulls various items (bags, boxes, carts, etc.) while utilizing proper technique.
