About The Position

Essentia Health is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to serve at St. Mary's Hospital in Superior, Wisconsin. This Sterile Tech works Monday through Friday on day shift, a total of 48 to 64 hours biweekly based on facility needs. No weekend, holiday, or on-call rotations are required. Shifts usually start between 6:30 am and 8:00 am and are 8 hours. Responsible for the reprocessing of reusable surgical instruments and patient care equipment for use in surgery and throughout various nursing units. Plays a vital role in ensuring clean, safe, sterile instruments and equipment are available to hospital staff for use in patient care.

Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry items up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull heavy carts.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to perform frequent bending, squatting, crouching, reaching, twisting, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, potentially noisy and warm environment.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues with equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing protocols.
  • Reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Tech I: Must be certified as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) within 2 years of hire.
  • Tech II: Must be certified as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Responsibilities

  • Reprocessing of reusable surgical instruments and patient care equipment for use in surgery and throughout various nursing units.
  • Ensuring clean, safe, sterile instruments and equipment are available to hospital staff for use in patient care.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods, often during an entire 8-hour shift or longer.
  • Frequently lifting and carrying items of varying weights, with routine lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Pushing and pulling heavy carts, which can weigh hundreds of pounds when fully loaded with equipment and supplies.
  • Handling and assembling delicate surgical instruments and operating equipment.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, crouching, reaching, twisting, and kneeling.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment that can be noisy and warm due to machinery such as autoclaves.
  • Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods to protect from exposure to blood/body fluids, chemicals, and other hazards.
  • Meticulous attention to detail for inspecting instruments for cleanliness and damage.
  • Troubleshooting issues with equipment and adapting to changing protocols.
  • Maintaining reliable and consistent attendance.
