About The Position

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital - Sterile Processing Services is seeking an experienced and certified Sterile Processing Technician for a part-time position. This role involves a rotation of weekends and on-call duties. The technician will be responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring all processes meet established hospital procedures and manufacturer guidelines. The position also requires validation of sterilization equipment, performance of low-temperature sterilization, and demonstration of leadership and communication skills to support team outcomes and quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Certified Central Service Tech within 90 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment: Wears proper protective attire, follows established procedures for decontamination, sets up and ensures proper function of decontamination equipment, maintains a neat and clean work area, reports and tags malfunctioning equipment, cleans and disinfects equipment and work area, and handles infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
  • Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Examines instruments for cleanliness and proper function, tests all instrumentation for correct function, performs electrical tests on insulated instrumentation, assembles instrument sets according to Censitrac Instrument Tracking system tray count sheets, and follows manufacturer guidelines for packaging and wrapping items for sterilization.
  • Validation of Sterilization Equipment: Runs appropriate tests for sterilizers (biological, bowie dick), validates and documents sterilization cycles using biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators in the Censitrac Instrument Tracking system.
  • Performance of Sterilization: Scans all items into sterilizer loads using Censitrac Instrument Tracking system, labels each item processed, positions items on sterilizer carts for effective sterilization, includes Biological Challenge pack as required, observes and assesses sterilizer operation by interpreting data strips, scans strips into Censitrac, documents test results, and initiates recalls for failed cycles, notifying management immediately.
  • Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Places sterile items for distribution, receives and inspects supplies for contaminants, completes case carts for OR according to standard work, completes case cart assembly logs and communication forms, and assists with cleaning storage areas.
  • Performance of Low Temperature, Sterrad, Sterilization: Assures items are dry before assembly, utilizes Censitrac for assembly, wraps or containerizes items, runs daily biological tests, labels items, positions items on sterilizer carts, and observes/assesses sterilizer operation by interpreting data strips, scanning into Censitrac, and documenting results.
  • Demonstration of Leadership Behaviors: Assists with daily work assignment adjustments, observes employee activities for quality control, communicates equipment malfunctions, acts as a liaison between SPD and other departments, and assists with ordering and receiving supplies.
  • Implementation of Quality Improvement Ideas to Enhance Operation and Team Function: Presents problem/improvement opportunities with an A3 action plan, monitors process improvement indicators, and assists in precepting new associates and students.
  • Communication Skill to Support the Accomplishment of Team Outcome: Understands verbal and written instructions, communicates properly with co-workers and customers, documents appropriately in Censitrac and shift reports, collaborates with co-workers to prioritize workload, cooperates to produce productive outputs, works in all areas to accomplish daily tasks, and gives and receives feedback.
  • Maintenance of Effective Functions in the Department: Demonstrates independent function in performing tasks, reaches consensus with the team for productive operations, and supports team decisions.
