About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for preparing, packing, and wrapping all instruments, packaging material, and equipment for sterilization. This role ensures that all items are sterile and ready for use in a timely manner. The technician will manage the sterile processing workload, perform proper washing, disinfecting, and sterilization of instruments, and maintain accurate records for audits. Key responsibilities include preparing instrument packs, understanding sterilization procedures for different equipment (ethylene oxide or steam), and managing the flow of instruments and materials. The role also involves inventory management, cleaning and maintaining autoclaves, performing biological monitoring, and managing a dating system for supplies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • 1-2 years Sterile Processing, Sterilization, or Hospital environment experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing and scheduling of sterile processing workload.
  • Proper washing, disinfecting and sterilization of specific instruments.
  • Accurate record keeping and ensuring all proper documentation is filled out, reviewed, signed off, and readily available for audits.
  • Preparation of instrument packs and proper placement of surgical instruments on the instrument trays.
  • Determining which equipment/instruments are used for ethylene oxide or steam sterilization.
  • Systematic flow and control of the operating instruments, materials and services in the processing room for processing and recovery.
  • Assisting the department head in exercising necessary controls in handling supplies and equipment, decontaminating, autoclaving and distribution of reusable packs and trays.
  • Observing the sterile processing inventory daily for low par level items and requesting supplies needed from the materials management department.
  • Ensuring proper functioning and cleanliness of autoclaves and cleaning autoclave carts and stainless steel as needed.
  • Performing biological monitoring of all sterilization cycles.
  • Maintaining dating system for recall of supplies according to shelf life.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
