About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a critical role in supporting surgical and procedural teams through the decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and trays. This role directly contributes to safe patient care and successful surgical outcomes. It is an active, fast-paced role that combines technical skill, attention to detail, teamwork, and physical movement throughout the shift. Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience in sterile processing or healthcare preferred.
  • Ability to act with integrity, kindness, and exhibit empathy.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous sterile processing or healthcare experience is preferred, but not required.
  • International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification
  • Candidates will be expected to obtain at least one of the following certifications within two years of hire: International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA) Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
  • Minimum of one (1) of the below must successfully be obtained within two (2) years of hire as applicable to assigned location: International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) certification

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to strict department and regulatory standards.
  • Perform quality assurance checks to ensure instruments are safe, functional, and surgery-ready.
  • Assemble surgical trays and instrument sets with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Wrap, label, and prepare trays and equipment for sterilization and transport.
  • Maintain organized inventory of instruments, implants, and supplies.
  • Communicate shortages, equipment concerns, or damaged instruments to the appropriate teams.
  • Work closely with surgical staff and healthcare teams to ensure instruments and supplies are available when needed.
  • Help maintain efficient workflow in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Manually sort, disassemble, clean and/or disinfect instruments, scopes and supplies per department protocol for assigned area(s).
  • Utilize critical thinking skills in regards to workflow and assignment.
  • Perform quality control on instruments/scopes by checking for visual damage, sharpness, cleanliness, and working condition.
  • Initiate process for repairs and/or replaces as applicable to assigned area(s).
  • Complete all daily production and quality control records.
  • Recommend ordering of new instruments as needed.
  • Stock surgical case cart area, processing, decontamination, and code blue cart shelving.
  • Stock and maintain code blue carts for immediate need and usage.
  • Continually check for any outdates of sterile items and packaging integrity.
  • Perform immediate-use steam sterilization of instrumentation using proper technique.
  • Prepare surgical instrument sets and/or trays.
  • Prioritize production of surgical case cart, floor stock trays and miscellaneous.
  • Wrap, package, and set up instrument trays per department protocol.
  • Label all instrument sets, peel-pouches, etc.
  • Efficiently and accurately load sterilizers per department procedure and as applicable to assigned area(s).
  • Sterilize instruments, scopes, supplies and linen using mandated sterilization processes per department protocol.
  • Ensure proper operation of sterilization units through daily quality control testing.
  • Inspect equipment as applicable to assigned area(s) for visible signs of malfunction and report malfunction to leader in a timely manner.
  • Process requisitions and requests for case carts, instrumentation and supplies in a timely manner.
  • Communicate deficits in supplies or instruments for case carts to appropriate stakeholders per department protocol.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance as scheduled by department leadership.
