About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation and equipment. This role ensures that all instruments are clean, functional, and sterile for patient use, adhering to strict procedures and utilizing tracking systems. The technician will work with various sterilization equipment, including low-temperature Sterrad, and maintain a clean and organized work environment. This position involves handling infectious waste and completing case carts for the Operating Room.

Requirements

  • High School Education
  • At least one year of Sterile Processing experience is required
  • Central Service Tech Certification is required within 90 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment: Wears proper protective attire, follows established procedures for decontamination, sets up and ensures proper function of decontamination equipment, maintains a neat and clean work area, reports and tags malfunctioning equipment, cleans and disinfects equipment and work area at shift completion, and handles infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
  • Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Examines instruments for cleanliness and function, tests all instrumentation for correct function and electrical insulation, assembles instrument sets according to Censitrac tracking system and tray count sheets, places instruments to ensure sterilization and ease of use, and follows manufacturer guidelines for packaging and wrapping for sterilization.
  • Validation of Sterilization Equipment: Runs appropriate tests (biological, Bowie Dick) for sterilizers, validates and documents sterilization cycles in Censitrac using biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
  • Sterilization: Scans all items into sterilizer loads using Censitrac, labels processed items with correct load labels, positions items on sterilizer carts for proper sterilization, includes biological challenge packs as required, observes and assesses sterilizer operation by interpreting data strips, scans strips into Censitrac, documents test results, and initiates recalls for failed cycles, notifying management immediately.
  • Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Places sterile items in appropriate areas for distribution, ensuring accuracy by department, receives supplies from warehouse and vendors ensuring they are free of contaminants, completes case carts for OR following standard work, completes case cart assembly logs and communication forms, and assists with cleaning storage areas and workstations.
  • Low Temperature, Sterrad, Sterilization: Assures items are dry before assembly, utilizes Censitrac for assembly, wraps or containerizes items, uses Tyvek pouches, runs daily biological tests, labels items, positions items for sterilization, observes and assesses sterilizer operation, scans data strips into Censitrac, and documents test results.
