About The Position

St. Luke’s Surgical at The Villages is seeking a full-time Sterile Processing Technician. Position Summary: The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical equipment, and supplies. This role is essential to ensuring that sterile products and equipment are consistently available for patient care and surgical procedures, in accordance with infection control and regulatory standards. The technician plays a critical role in preventing healthcare-associated infections and supporting safe surgical outcomes.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in sterile processing or a surgical services environment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive used instruments, equipment, and supplies from operating rooms and other clinical areas.
  • Manually and mechanically clean instruments using ultrasonic washers, washers/disinfectors, and other approved equipment.
  • Follow infection control protocols for handling and disinfecting biohazardous materials.
  • Inspect instruments for damage, wear, and proper function before reassembly.
  • Sort, inspect, and assemble instrument trays and surgical sets according to established count sheets and procedure-specific configurations.
  • Package items for sterilization using appropriate wrapping techniques or sterilization containers.
  • Label trays and supplies clearly with sterilization indicators and expiration dates.
  • Operate sterilization equipment including steam autoclaves, low-temperature sterilizers (e.g., hydrogen peroxide plasma, ethylene oxide), and high-level disinfectants.
  • Monitor and document sterilization cycles, including biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
  • Release items for use only after confirming successful sterilization cycle completion.
  • Restock case carts, supply rooms, and sterile storage areas as needed.
