About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. This role ensures that sterile products are prepared and maintained for distribution to various departments, particularly the Operating Room. The technician must adhere to strict procedures to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the integrity of sterile items. This is a PRN (as needed) position requiring flexibility to cover multiple shifts and respond to emergency situations.

  • 1 year experience preferred, but not required.
  • Certified Central Service Tech preferred, but not required.
  • Central Service Tech Certification Obtained within 12 Months Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment: Ensure soiled instrumentation and equipment are decontaminated properly to prevent cross-contamination, wearing proper protective attire, following established procedures, collecting and transporting soiled equipment, setting up and ensuring proper function of decontamination equipment, maintaining a clean work area, reporting equipment malfunctions, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and work area, and handling infectious waste according to hospital procedure.
  • Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping: Professionally assemble surgical items, instrument sets, and floor trays, ensuring a sterile product. Examine surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly. Assemble instrument sets with the correct number and type of instruments, completing count sheets to document contents. Package and/or wrap trays/items for terminal sterilization following established procedures.
  • Performance of all equipment in Sterile Processing: Ensure sterility is achieved using appropriate sterilization processes (e.g., Steam sterilizer, VPRO Max). Use test packs to monitor sterilizer function daily. Observe and assess sterilizer operation, interpreting recorder data. Label each item processed with the correct load label. Position items on the sterilizer cart to ensure sterilization. Document processed items and review/interpret test pack data for verification. Report malfunctions immediately.
  • Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions: Maintain inventory and appropriate storage of sterile items for distribution. Receive supplies, ensuring they are free of external contaminants. Complete case carts for the Operating Room according to standard procedure. Assist with cleaning storage areas and workstations. Place sterile items in appropriate areas for distribution, accurately sorted by department. Store sterile items, maintaining first-in/first-out inventory control. Answer the telephone courteously to take supply requests and respond promptly to ASAP and STAT requests. Complete Sterile Processing Department paperwork accurately.
  • Exchange and Delivery of Code Blue case carts: Process crash carts to ensure they are complete and equipment is operational. Clean carts, examine inventory, remove non-standard items, and check sterility integrity of sterile items. Check operation of flashlight, laryngoscope handle and blades, wall suction, bulbs, and back-up batteries. Follow established procedures for exchange of crash carts and work with units and pharmacy for timely exchange. Correctly assemble the intubation roll after use.
  • Participates in the Department related to quality improvement: Monitor quality assurance indicators, assist in revision of policies and procedures, and act as Preceptor for new employees. Competency is demonstrated through observation by the Sterile Processing Supervisor, Lead Tech/Educator, and/or Preceptor.
