About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician II is responsible for assembling and sterilizing all instruments, instrument trays, utensils, and linen packs. This role also performs distribution functions related to case carts and sterile instrumentation. The technician must be proficient in all Sterile Processing functions, including rotating weekend and on-call duties. A strict dress code, including surgical scrubs, is required for maintaining a professional appearance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or CBSPD certification preferred.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to frequently lift to 35 lbs.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, pull, and place and retrieve material.
  • There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Central Sterile Processing program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience as a sterile processing technician.
  • Advancement to tech II based on department needs, competency and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Uses established departmental and regulatory standards, principles, and procedures for aseptic technique.
  • Processes and assembles instrument trays, respiratory/anesthesia equipment, linen, and utensils accurately and promptly.
  • Operates steam and plasma sterilizers according to the established schedule, including loading, unloading, and moving sterilizer carts.
  • Runs, verifies, and records necessary tests on all steamed and plasma equipment used in the department.
  • Ensures that Bowie-Dick removal test is run on pre-vacuum steam sterilizer each morning and after repairs.
  • Reports all malfunctions to the biomedical department, department supervisor, and the O.R. supervisor.
  • Precepts and verifies competency and skill development of staff as appropriate, providing meaningful feedback to the Training and Staff Development Coordinator and Clinical Operations Supervisor or Manager.
  • Performs spot checks of paperwork, labeling, and biological reads.
  • Inspects packages to ensure all external indicators, filters, and/or labels are securely affixed to items, and returns non-satisfactory products to the instrument room.
  • Performs High Level Disinfection (HLD) with 100% accuracy.
  • Utilizes patient-specific pick lists to accurately gather surgical instruments and disposable supplies requested by the attending surgeon or another Peri-Operative representative.
  • Documents the case cart build process in SPM, continuously updating the record as items are fulfilled to maintain the integrity of the needs list.
  • Responds to OR requests and participates in OR huddles as needed.
  • Communicates unmet surgical supply requests to leadership for resolution assistance.
  • Performs scheduled and cyclic physical inventory of supplies and instruments within the department.
