About The Position

This is an entry-level position requiring at least three (3) month’s experience in sterile processing or graduate from an accredited Sterile Processing program. The technician will be responsible for assuring sterile supplies, preparing and sterilizing procedural trays, disassembling and reassembling instruments, conducting biological tests, and operating specialized equipment within the Sterile Processing Department. The role also involves ensuring compliance with privacy standards, assisting the Operating Room team, managing inventory, and ordering supplies. Additionally, the technician must complete required training and adhere to Navajo/Indian Preference in Employment Policy.

Requirements

  • At least three (3) month’s experience in sterile processing or graduate from an accredited Sterile Processing program.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Certificate in Basic Life Support and maintain certification.
  • Must obtain valid certification as a Central Service Technician/Sterile Processing Technician within one (1) year of date of hire from one of the following: The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) OR The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
  • Valid, unrestricted insurable driver’s license.
  • Resume and references are required.

Responsibilities

  • Assure sterile supplies in the main Sterile Processing Department (SPD) storage area at specific intervals, rotate supplies and is responsible for re-sterilizing those that have been compromised.
  • Prepare and sterilize a variety of procedural trays used in inpatient units, outpatient departments, outlying clinics and the surgical suites.
  • Disassemble and reassemble any instrument or piece of equipment that require cleaning and sterilizing, and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Conduct biological tests in SPD, taking cultures of equipment to assure proper sterilization is maintained per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Attend and participate in in-service education program, Quality Assurance/Process Improvement Program, orientation of new personnel to SPD, and attends unit staff meetings.
  • Communicate with the Operating Room team and/or nurse leader about the storage of sterile supplies, instruments and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment used in the Sterile Processing Department, i.e., Washer/ Decontaminator, Autoclaves, Steris System One processor, Sonic Washer and a heat sealer.
  • Ensure compliance with Privacy and HIPAA standards.
  • Abide by policy with recall loads related to sterilization problems that may compromise patient care.
  • Assist team by providing materials, supplies, instruments, that are properly processed and sterilized as needed to maintain OR patient flow with a minimum of delays.
  • Organize the inventory, order any missing equipment and maintain recipe tray forms, and other documents need for the SPD.
  • Order and receive surgical service supplies and supplementary patient care supplies.
  • Assist, promote, and support compliance with established Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Standards.
  • Complete all yearly required CMS training by their due date.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
