About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the care and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies. The technician maintains established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment. Orders supplies for the area. The technician performs the appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keeps accurate records.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Instrument technician experience, 2 years or equivalent experience in hospital materials management department
  • Certified Sterile Processing Certificate required (CRCST-Certified Registered Central Service Technician (IAHCSMM) or CSPDT-Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD))
  • Graduate of an accredited sterile processing/central service curriculum inclusive of a clinical rotation or 400 hours of previous sterile processing experience
  • Must be able to retain knowledge of identification and necessary handling requirements of surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Extensive knowledge regarding processes used in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling and packaging of medical/surgical material to include, but not limited to, linen, instruments and equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment.
  • Order supplies for the area.
  • Perform appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keep accurate records.
  • Prepare trays for designated areas according to prescribed procedures.
  • Wrap and/or package items for specified areas according to procedures prescribed for designated areas.
  • Operate bar code instrument tracking system.
  • Disassemble, clean, assemble and test specialty instrumentation and equipment for proper functioning.
  • Differentiate between single-use and reusable items.
  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments, medical supplies and equipment, and assemble, wrap and sterilize trays of instruments.
  • Follow proper Universal Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.
  • Monitor biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and make them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
