The Sterile Processing Tech works in a fast-paced Sterile Processing Department and is responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, sterilizing, inspecting, storing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. The work follows a processing cycle: decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and dispensing. Items are inspected throughout the process to ensure they are clean, in good repair, assembled, and processed correctly. Technicians also maintain records and tracking across job functions and provide properly processed products when needed, keeping patient safety at the center of quality concerns. Technicians assemble case carts for scheduled surgeries, including the sterile instrumentation required for each patient procedure, then transport completed carts to the OR and place them in the designated area. Depending on the Grand Rapids hire site, departments may handle approximately 40–90 surgical cases. Team members wear surgical attire in the department. New team members complete a 90-day orientation, including an SPD 101 class covering departmental standards of work and regulations, and work with a preceptor. A Sterile Processing educational training course is required. Its first seven weeks are mandatory first shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; after the course, the team member transitions to their hired shift for the remainder of orientation.
