The Sterile Processing (SPD) Technician is responsible for the decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. This role requires knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals, and medical instruments to effectively decontaminate, assemble, wrap, and sterilize equipment, supplies, and instruments. The technician must also understand equipment function, applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards, and consistently follow cleaning checklists. Responsibilities include cleaning and restocking work areas, floating between decontamination and sterile processing areas, maintaining communication with operating room staff, applying principles of aseptic technique and precautions, assisting with inventory, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. The role also involves staying knowledgeable about regulatory standards (AAMI, ANSI), collaborating with other disciplines, reporting occurrences, fostering developmental and educational processes (including precepting), participating in continuing education, and managing controllable costs through responsible resource use.
