About The Position

The Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment. This role involves maintaining sterile processing areas, receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment, and assisting Operating Room staff by providing necessary instruments and supplies for scheduled procedures. The technician must follow approved infection control, quality assurance, and departmental policies and procedures, including cleaning, sterilizing, and maintaining equipment. A key aspect of the role is ensuring the sterility and availability of instruments and supplies, adhering to safety policies, and participating in quality assurance monitoring. The position also involves training new personnel and contributing to a safe, clean, and orderly work environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience or training in the disinfection/sterilization process required
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions.
  • Able to check all sterilization monitoring, record keeping, and quality assurance practices.
  • Require high-level visual and auditory acuity for timely response.
  • Ability to move quickly in response to the operating room needs, to stand for long periods, occasional overhead and low reaching, and to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Maintaining the sterile processing areas.
  • Receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Assisting Operating Room staff by providing instruments and supplies for scheduled procedures.
  • Following approved infection control, quality assurance, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Cleaning, sterilizing, and maintaining equipment.
  • Entering information into logbooks regarding sterilizer operations.
  • Adhering to safety policies and procedures.
  • Applying the principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures.
  • Performing required maintenance of instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Operating V-Pro equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Inspecting, disassembling, sorting, cleaning, and processing reusable instrumentation and equipment.
  • Following manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing of instrumentations, equipment, and implants.
  • Identifying, inspecting, and assembling all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser and endoscope instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Properly loading and unloading sterilizer.
  • Verifying that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load.
  • Assembling necessary supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to count sheets.
  • Inspecting equipment for proper working condition.
  • Assisting in work area by cleaning, storing packaging, and sterilizing instruments.
  • Maintaining and updating instrument cards.
  • Maintaining standards to provide a safe, clean, and orderly environment.
  • Checking and validating event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheets; and equipment monitoring.
  • Accurately documenting and maintaining daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory guidelines and infection control standards.
  • Maintaining accurate sterilization records.
  • Reporting all malfunctioning equipment to Team Leader.
  • Cleaning and restocking Sterile Processing Department.
  • Participating in department employee orientation, meetings, in-services, training, and competency programs.
  • Training personnel on PPE, inspecting, disassembling, sorting, cleaning, and processing instrumentation and equipment, selecting and operating specialized sterilization equipment, and following device manufacturers cleaning guidelines.
  • Attending internal and external classes for growth and development.
  • Demonstrating effective written and oral communication.
  • Actively supporting and contributing to teamwork in the workplace.
  • Demonstrating responsibility in adhering to posted work schedule.
  • Assisting with patient care as directed by the R.N.
  • Helping with the "turn over" of cases.
  • Performing other related duties as necessary.
